Question :

Can I get a quick information about the cut and fill for existing terrain and a surface in OpenRoads?

Answer :

The "Create Cut and Fill Volumes" tool calculates cut and fill volumes between two surfaces and creates a 3D mesh solid with volume attributes. The volumes can be viewed in "Properties" or "Elemen Information".

Steps :

1. Select the tool from "Task Manager > Terrain Modelling".

2. Follow the heads-up prompts, select the exiting surface, select the Design surface.

3. Select the Feature Definitions for cut and fill, and give a data point to accept the selection.

4. Select the cut and fill mesh created in the view, and check the volumes from the Element information or Properties.

Question :

If a DGN file with a terrain model is created in MX SS3, the terrain model is not visible in MX SS2?

Answer :

The terrain element type was not recognized prior to SS3. Although the terrain model is not visible, there is NO data loss and the DGN file can be re-opened in MX SS3.

If a terrain model created in Microstation SS3 needs to be used in Microstation SS2, then the terrain model can be dropped. When it is dropped the terrain model is removed and replaced by graphical elements, such as lines, shapes, and text.

Importing photos and other multimedia into OpenRoads Survey

Product(s):InRoads, MX, GEOPAK
Version(s):08.11.09.674+
Area: Survey

Question:

How do I automatically attach multimedia files to points in the Survey field book?

Answer:

Prior to SS3 refresh 08.11.09.674, Civil Survey only automatically imported images from Leica VIVA data collector type files.

Beginning in 08.11.09.674, images can be automatically imported and assigned to specific points from any data collector format.  The rule is that the point must contain an attribute where the attribute name contains “PHOTO” and the attribute value contains the image relative path and name.

For example,  TDS RW5 example would be:

GPS,PN2,LA38.385570580000,LN-83.455594940000,EL136.500000,--ELECTRIC_POLE
AT,TNPHOTO1,TV.\Images\ElectricPole.JPG

Attribute name is PHOTO1

Attribute Value is .\Images\ElectricPole.JPG

The value points to a jpg with a relative path.

Trimble DC example would be:

D9F1        CP02            CP01    324.12615620833392.53793880000000.00000000000000IPINS           50.010490752312420.002777777777780.00277777777778
87FCIPINS
89FCPHOTO1  .\imgoo1.jpg

During import, the software looks for points with attribute names containing “PHOTO” and grabs that image and attaches it to the point.  The image must be locatable by the relative path to the RAW file.  Therefore, make sure that the images are downloaded and in a directory relative to the raw file or in the same directory as the raw file.

Use Scalable Terrain Models in OpenRoads?

Revision 2 posted to Civil Design Wiki by Kevin McDonald on 12/10/2015 10:46:56 PM

Product(s):InRoads, MX, GEOPAK
Version(s):08.11.09+
Area: Terrain Model

Question:

Can I use a scalable terrain model for OpenRoads design?

Answer:

There are two methods to export an OpenRoads Terrain:

First: In the Scalable Terrain Model dialog, the "File>Export STM to TM" command can be used to generate a Terrain from the entire Scalable Terrain Model.  The exported terrain model can be used by OpenRoads.

Using this tool, the size of the terrain model element is governed by the value, in MB, of the "STM_DOWNSAMPLING_PREFSIZE" configuration variable. The default is 5.

Second: In the Scalable Terrain Model dialog, the "Edit>Extract TM element" command can be used to generate a Terrain model from a specified area (Fence, Block, Element, etc...).  This method will export all points within the selected area, so be aware that you might get an error message that the selected area is too big when using the "Extract TM element" tool.  The number of points that can be stored in a Terrain Model is limited (typically less than 9 million points.)

<p>Under the properties for my Civil Cell it says "Valid for Placement = No".&nbsp; What does this mean?</p>

<p></p>
<p><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><span style="font-size: 150%;">Answer:</span></span></strong></p>

<p>The user does not control this setting.&nbsp; There are instances when changes made to a civil cell can render it invalid. When that occurs, the <strong>Valid for Placement</strong> setting will change from "Yes" to "No".&nbsp; For example, if a linear template is applied to the civil cell, any changes that are made to the linear template after the civil cell is created will render the civil cell invalid.&nbsp; Even something as simple as changing the name of a feature in the linear template can result in an invalid civil cell.</p>
<p>The solution is to drop the civil cell and recreate it.&nbsp; This will restore the Valid for Placement setting to "Yes".</p>
